The Walter Kaitz Foundation / National Cable & Telecommunications Association

Project Overview

Miller & Smith

National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) is the leading trade association for the cable television industry in the United States. NCTA membership is comprised of cable operators serving more than 90 percent of the nation's cable television households. As the charitable arm of NCTA, the Walter Kaitz Foundation was established in 1983 to promote diversity within the cable television industry. Shortly after its relocation to Washington, DC from California, the foundation selected Filnet to initiate and carryout its corporate branding objectives. In addition to its branding goals, Filnet provided front-end design, as well as back-end programming using an open source technology.

The Walter Kaitz Foundation had a number of initiatives it needed to implement under its new executive director. WKF’s overall goal was to have its website serve as the premier source for NCTA member organizations looking to meet their corporate diversity commitments and missions.

Filnet initially embarked on a discovery and preliminary requirement gathering process. Then, Filnet designed new logos for the organization and its Diversity365 initiative. After new logos were approved and requirements were agreed upon, Filnet began the process of constructing the WKF website. Since there was very little historical data on WKF, Filnet drafted the initial content for the website, which would be adopted and modified later by the foundation’s in-house communications team.

Filnet designed the look and feel of the website’s front end; and developed and fulfilled software requirements on the backend. Through conversations and evaluations with WKF staff, Filnet came up with a list of action items that would ultimately guide the progress of the website’s development and implementation.

Filnet used the open source technologies of PHP and MySQL to develop the site’s backend. With Filnet’s open source solution, security features are easily implemented by the WKF technology staff. Our technology also makes it easier for the foundation’s non-technical staff to make modifications as needed and avoid any additional maintenance and development charges.

Filnet designed and developed a completely new brand for WKF. An attractive, new Walter Kaitz Foundation website was also developed to serve as a resource for WKF visitors. The website advances the organization’s mission through this new brand and interactive website created and developed entirely by Filnet. The new website showcases the foundation's priorities of cable industry-wide supplier diversity, targeted grants programs and its annual fundraising dinner. The website also features a database driven calendar and site search functionality.
